Research Lines
PPGEEC contains two concentration areas: Information Systems and Electric Power Systems. Within these concentration areas, the graduate program presents its respective research lines.
- Concentration Area: Information Systems
In this concentration area, we approach any research topic related to data collection, processing, analysis, organization and transmission that represent information about a physical phenomenon. The study topics in this area, whose focus is quite comprehensive, will be innovative techniques that can be considered key points in the design and performance of information systems. In addition to the specific knowledge of each research line, this concentration area will require the student to have a good understanding of basic sciences such as mathematics, physics, programming languages and probability.
(1) Research Line: Communication Systems
This research line aims to study, analyze and develop the most advanced technologies for communication networks and systems. In particular, the focus is on wireless and optical communication systems. With regard to wireless communications, this research line will address recent and emerging topics such as cognitive radio, cooperative systems, MIMO system, resource management, signal processing and cross-layer techniques, without excluding other related areas of interest. As for optical communications, this research line will address topics such as quantum optical systems and devices, optical logic gates based on non-linearity of couplers, etc.
(2) Research Line: Algorithms and Distributed Computing
This research line brings together themes which aim to: advance the state-of-the-art of computing, develop models of computer systems and techniques to treat and analyze these models, as well as develop research related to parallel and distributed processing environments. In this context, within this line of research the following themes are covered: algorithms, artificial intelligence, signal processing, graph theory, computer theory and distributed systems.
- Concentration Area: Electric Power Systems
This concentration area is involved in the research, design, installation and operation of equipment and power systems, aiming at the processing and control of electrical energy. Professionals in this area have broad spectrum skills, such as the ability to assess the possibilities and efficiency of using renewable energy sources that can complement conventional sources, allowing for reductions in environmental impact, as well as better management of non-renewable resources. The evaluation and development of new techniques for the control and static processing of electrical energy, aiming at increasing quality and energy efficiency, go through several stages from the modelling, simulation, development and construction of new technologies.
(1) Research Line: Power Electronics
Electronics applications to power systems through research and development of new topologies of static converters for industrial applications, stabilized sources of electrical energy and electrical energy sources for telecommunications. These are also classic or modern control strategies aimed at the activation of electric machines and the conditioning of electric energy produced from renewable sources, such as: wind generators and photovoltaic panels.
